How do I network with a consulting firm when I have no obvious connection?

I'm trying to reach people at a target consulting firm but don't have alumni, former colleagues or close connections there. How do I find a natural reason to contact someone without sending a completely generic cold message?

Ian’s Answer

1) The reason for the generic advice is because the advice is tailored for a generic audience!

2) You've misinterpreted the advice. Don't limit yourself to only people who went to the same school. Don't limit yourself to only people who only currently work at MBB. And don't limit yourself to not asking for a referral. Rather:

  • Message anyone similar to you (same country, language, major, religion, race, gender, prior company, interests, etc.) Connect on that way

  • Message people in any role and any office and “ex” MBB. Then, play “tag” (i.e. get them to put you in touch with someone else)

  • “Hint” at a referral. Let them know you're applying and ask if they have any advice/tips.

Good luck!
