Recruiting Strategy

McKinsey

How should I prepare for an introductory call with a McKinsey recruiter?

A mentor introduced me to a McKinsey recruiter, who invited me to a 30-minute Zoom call and suggested applying for a consulting analyst role. It was described as an intro call, but I don't want to turn up unprepared. What should I be ready to discuss, and should I still treat it as an evaluative conversation?

Ian’s Answer

This very much sounds like just that, an intro call. They're looking to see where you would fit best.

Remember, any and every interaction with a target company (or, really, in the professional world) should be treated as an evaluative interaction.

Absolutely be ready with a (short) version of resume walkthrough/elevator pitch, why consulting, and why McKinsey. Be prepared to talk about any of your current/past work and academic experiences.

Make sure you come across as personable, intelligent, respectful, eager, coachable, etc.
