Selecting the right coach for your case interview preparation can be a daunting task. With numerous options available, it’s essential to conduct thorough research and consider various factors before deciding on the best coach for your needs. To help you with this process, we have compiled a comprehensive guide with 9 essential aspects to consider when choosing the top coach among all case interview prep services.

1. Assess the Coach’s Success Rate - How do They Compare to Other Top Coaches?

A coach’s reported success rate can be useful, but it depends on which candidates and outcomes are counted. To compare coaches fairly, ask the following questions.

  • Do you filter or reject candidates, or do you accept anyone? (A top coach should be open to working with any candidate, as their techniques should work for anyone)

Note: I accept and work with all candidates - I use different tools in different ways to drive results

  • What is your success rate? (Look for a coach with a high success rate)

Note: 95% of my candidates land a consulting job and 65-70% of those with MBB interviews get the MBB offer

  • What is your cut-off for considering a candidate in the success/fail metrics? (A top coach should have clear criteria)

My cutoff is an adequate timeline of at least 1-2 months, a minimum number of 3 coaching sessions, and a candidate who actually completed the homework and assignments. This by no means implies you will not get the offer if you do not meet these criteria, but these are the criteria in which I am confident I can land you an offer.

When selecting a case interview prep coach, prioritize results over time. The ultimate goal is to land an offer at your desired firm, so choose a coach who can help you achieve that objective. Investing in a coach who can’t deliver results is a waste of not only money but also your time and opportunity.

Remember to trust your gut when evaluating a coach’s success rate and consider how well their past candidates have performed.

2. Consider the Coach’s Experience and Background

The experience and background of a case interview prep coach are crucial factors to consider. Some things to look for in a coach include:

  • Personal success in the recruiting process

  • Time spent at a top consulting firm (ideally MBB)

  • Experience teaching and coaching in general

  • Extensive experience case coaching, both in terms of years and # of candidates

  • Experience interviewing

I successfully interviewed across 8 firms during my consulting recruiting journey and ultimately accepted an offer at BCG. I have taught my whole life (Economics, French, English, Agile Methodology, etc.) and have 4+ years of experience coaching 500+ candidates across 4,000+ coaching sessions.

3. Evaluate the Coach’s Demand and Ranking on Various Interview Prep Services Platforms

When choosing a case interview prep coach, consider their demand and ranking on the platform. A high demand for their interview prep services and a top ranking are indicators of a successful coach. You can filter coaches by firm and recommendation rate and read the personal comments in their reviews to gain further insight into their effectiveness.

For example, I have been a top-ranked coach on PrepLounge for over 3 years.

4. Review the Coach’s Teaching Approach

It is also important to consider the coach’s teaching approach. Ask yourself if the coach’s style resonates with you and if their methods will help you learn and retain information. Look for coaches who are patient, organized, and motivating and who use relevant examples and clearly explain concepts.

Look for coaches who teach you to adapt your approach to the case rather than memorize frameworks or follow a fixed pathway. Ask how their methods reflect the demands of the interviews you are preparing for.

Taking the time to review a coach’s teaching approach can ensure that you get the most out of your case interview prep sessions.

5. Review the Coach’s Materials

A top case interview prep coach should have a wealth of materials and resources available for their candidates. Ask to see what materials they offer and assess whether these resources will be beneficial for your preparation. The materials should be comprehensive, up-to-date, and tailored to the specific needs of case interview candidates.

I support all of my candidates with materials across the entire consulting recruiting journey. This support is sent prior to every session and after every session to ensure you are progressing optimally. You can learn more about the course I use to support my coaching here.

6. Gauge the Coach’s Customization and Adaptability

A top case interview prep coach should be able to tailor their approach to each candidate’s unique needs, strengths, and weaknesses. They should also be adaptable to your timeline and any specific requirements you may have. Avoid coaches who rely on one-size-fits-all approaches and seek out those who take the time to understand and address your individual needs.

I personally love being able to support candidates across all backgrounds and walks of life. I always say that no two coaching journeys look alike, and I truly mean it!

7. Understand That a Top Coach in Rankings Is Not Inherently Right for You

There is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to case interview prep coaching. Different coaches may be more suitable for different candidates, depending on their background, experience, and learning style. Even if they are present and high ranking across multiple sites for interview prep services, they may not be the right match. It’s essential to find a coach who is the best fit for you and your unique needs.

8. Schedule an Introductory Call with the Coach

Before committing to a case interview prep coach, it’s essential to have an introductory call with them. During this call, you can discuss their approach and methodology, assess their understanding of the case interview process, and evaluate their preparedness (e.g., supporting materials and plans). This conversation will also give you a sense of whether they are a good fit for your learning style.

Feel free to book an intro call with me here.

9. Speak to the Coach’s Former Candidates - Find Out What Makes Them a Top Coach

Another useful way to evaluate a case interview prep coach is by speaking to their former candidates. These individuals can provide you with firsthand insights into their experiences and the coach’s effectiveness in helping them succeed in the case interview process. Inquire about the coach’s teaching style, resources, support along the journey and anything else on your mind.

How can you find their past candidates? Either ask them to put you in touch with a past candidate or reach out to people who left reviews of their coaching experience on relevant interview prep services sites.

Conclusion

Selecting the right coach for your case interview preparation is a multifaceted process, but taking the time to make an informed decision can significantly influence your success. The right coach can provide you with invaluable resources, tailor their approach to your needs, and draw upon their wealth of experience to guide you through this challenging process. From examining their success rate to considering their teaching approach, the nine aspects highlighted in this guide can serve as an excellent starting point for identifying a high-quality coach.

Remember, the ideal coach will not just have a high success rate and a wealth of experience but will also be someone who can resonate with you on a personal level. They should be adaptable, capable of customizing their approach to your unique needs, and ready to engage with you in a way that complements your learning style. After all, the ultimate goal is not just to land a job at a desirable firm but to gain valuable skills and experiences along the way. Therefore, never underestimate the importance of finding a coach who can support you in reaching these objectives. It might take time and research, but the end result will be worth the investment.
