Can I use an academic case competition as a leadership story?
I'm a student and don't have many work examples yet. I did lead a student team during a case competition and helped organize the team and its ideas. Is an academic example like that strong enough for a leadership or teamwork question?

So, we do ideally want work experiences as examples, however, it's not at all bad to have a few academic experiences.
Overall, I think your story could be a good one. I've had a number of candidates successfully tell a group case competition story to demonstrate leadership/teamwork.
No need at all to mention the competitors name OR that you didn't get invited...just say "I was participating in a case competition".
