10. Succeeding on the Job

What the Recruiting Process Doesn't Prepare You For
The skills that get you an offer are not the same skills that make you effective once you're in the role. Consulting firms recruit on potential and expect performance from week one — navigating client environments, managing up, delivering under time pressure, and developing judgment that no case interview fully tests. Most new hires figure this out through trial and error. This course shortens that curve considerably.
Preparing Before You Start
The first part of the course focuses on what to do before your start date: the mindset adjustments, the practical preparation, and the mental model shifts that allow you to hit the ground running. Small differences in how you prepare at this stage compound quickly once you're in the role.
Performing Once You're There
The second part addresses on-the-job performance directly — how to manage your workload, how to build strong early relationships with managers and clients, how to receive and act on feedback, and how to develop the habits that lead to strong reviews and a sustainable trajectory within the firm. The goal isn't to survive your first year. It's to distinguish yourself in it.
